Logical Fallacy: How Would You Handle It?

October 14th, 2011

How would you respond to the following logical fallacy?

Sir, would you be interested in an all natural pet wormer that is non-toxic and totally safe for your pets.

Clientele,” I will go with what ever the vet recommends. They know what they are doing and wouldn’t give it to the dogs if it was not safe. Besides, chocolate is all natural and it is toxic to a dog.”

There are a number of issues here. One, the conflict of interest that the vet has in recommending something he is going to profit from. Second, the flawed and often forged science that is emerging.

Actually the test for dogs having worms is inconclusive. The worm medicine does not have a high efficiency and is in some states mandated.

Most importantly, the Diatomaceous earth (DE) that I was going to recommend actually has a number of scientific studies with both animals and humans indicating that it is even more effective than the toxic chemicals the vet prescribes.

The difference, the DE is dirt cheap and there is no profit in promoting it.

So, how would you proceed to win the client?

I have a few ideas. The client in this case is my father. What would you do?

Are You a Thought Leader?

September 22nd, 2011

Steve Siebold asked this question on his blog. I have been struggling on which way to take my career.

I have found it, which is why I am not posting as often on this site. I am working on a mindless weight loss system. It is in beta testing and as such, it is free for those who agree to give me feed back and testimonials.

Should You Ever Say, Does That Make Sense?

September 15th, 2011

Jerry Weissman makes an interesting argument as to why we should never use the phrase, does that make sense?

What we say is one of the elements of mastering public speaking. Imitating other speakers could result in our becoming a cliche.

What do you think?

I personally do not totally agree but his argument is compelling. I will have to think about it.

The Power of Words

September 7th, 2011

This is an example of the power of words and the power of illustrations.

I do not know where this came from, if it is real or not. As you read it, consider what your physical reactions are. As you do, remember that you can do the same with your audience.

According to a news report, a certain private school was recently faced with an unusual problem .

Some of young girls started using lipstick. But it did not stop there. They would then proceed to put lip stick kisses on in the bathroom mirrors.

There would be dozens of little lip stick kiss prints on the mirror every day. That evening, the custodian would remove them.

The next day the girls would put them back.

Finally the principle decided to do something to bring this to an end. She gave it considerable thought before coming up with a solution. Calling all the girls to the bathroom, she met with them along with the custodian.

The young women were told of the needless extra work they were making for the custodian. They were each asked a few questions, “Would you want someone to do this in your home?” How would you feel?”

As the principle went on to discuss the extra work created for the custodian who had to clean the mirrors every night, the girls rolled their eyes.

Realizing she was not getting through, she proceeded to have the custodian come in and demonstrate how much work it was to clean the mirrors.

She said, “Would you please show the girls how difficult it is to clean the mirrors every evening?”

The custodian went out to his cart and returned with a brush and a squeegee. He proceeded to take the brush, dip it in the toilet and then to wet the mirror.

The same eyes that were rolling moments before were now wide and horrified.

Before going on with the story, what did you do when you read how the custodian cleaned the mirrors. Did your lips pucker? Did you clinch your lips? Did you have some kind of visceral reaction?

If so, then you learned the power of words.

This is only one part of the process of reaching the audience. Learn more at the Audience section of Speechmastery.com

Contrarian Speech Topics: The Immune System

May 9th, 2011

If you want to rouse an audience, consider a topic that is contrarian. If you like medical speech topics, this is for you.

Modern medicine tries to heal us by putting chemicals in our body.

Holistic health tries to give our body what it needs to heal on its own.

There are three principles to good health: proper diet as in the read raw food diet, proper hydration (read The Water Cure) and proper oxygenation (read isometric exercise if you do not like or cannot do regular exercise).

These are the essential aspects of boosting our immunity.

The Glutathione Immune System will provide some of the contrarian informatiion.

What you will find on the GSH site is not the typical info on the web about immunity. For instance, foods to boost immunity, there is a more important aspect of avoiding foods in order to boost your immunity.
