Saying What is Right, Not What is Popular!

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

When growing up, I remember my father saying “My country, right or wrong…!”

I did not argue with him but secretly I disagreed. Here is the man who I looked up to, admired and in some ways wanted to be like.

You should know that he was in the military and made a career of the Navy Reserves.

Even though disagreeing with his ideology, a sound logical argument eluded me…until now.

Teddy provided the answer that eluded me.

Teddy Roosevelt, in the May 7, 1918 Kansas City Star said….

To announce that there must be no criticism of the President of that we are to stand by the President right or wrong is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American Public.

There is a higher moral standard that all mankind must answer to.

The Truth About Foreign Accents

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

A study from the University of Chicago found that speakers with foreign accents are viewed as being less truthful by listeners.

There is a big flaw with the study as far as public speakers are concerned. It does not apply.

If you have a very thick accent, are hard to understand and do not enunciate your words, yes you may be in trouble.

Yet how many of us love an accent from a foreign land when the words are clearly spoken and the speaker is easily understood.

Well apportioned accents can go a lot farther than a high pitched or hypernasalaty voice.

Consider the last movie you saw with an actor with a foreign accent. Were you captivated.

It is not as much the accent as it is sense stress, modulation, diction and pronunciation. What we say plays a big part of the picture for public speakers.

If on the other hand I am mis-pro-nounc-e-ating words in a foreign accent, then that is a different story.

So please, master pronunciation, not accent reduction.

Speak well and prosper.

Buy American Bad for the Economy? Probably!

Friday, April 9th, 2010

The other day a gentleman made a comment that I was not able to refute although I knew it to be wrong.

He said he tried to only buy American. I tried to engage him in a discussion that not only was it unamerican, it was unhealthy for the economy. I failed miserably.

When arguing an emotional topic, there is need to have even more emotional laden proof. It took only three clicks to find my answer.

Turns out, it is quite a depressing economic controversy.

You see, the great depression was felt to be caused by five different factors.

One was a tariff (Smoot-Hawley Tariff) designed to keep American money in America. Only problem, everyone else retaliated and started doing the same.

Guess what? The Great Depression was not all that the narrow minded thinking resulted in. An even greater catastrophe. The world wide tariff war that helped fuel the depression was one of the causes of the rise of extremism in Germany leading to World War II.

Thinking keeping jobs here will keep the money here may not only be narrow minded. It may lead to even worse problems. It may in the end be bad for the economy.

How would I argue it if given an opportunity?

Why do you feel that way would be the first question? The answer would be something like keeping the money and jobs here.

Then I would ask if there was any historical data that he based his thinking on, any proof that it would be a good idea to do this?

Then I would express agreement that his thinking was inline with 98% of the population and most economist.

Of course, these are the same economist that got us in the mess were in now. These are the same economist that were taught by the economist that were children of the economist that lived through the great depression.

Funny but history shows that those economist said the same thing. The only problem, those economist are considered partly responsible for the great depression and the resulting world wide depression and the rise of Nazi Germany which took the lives of numerous Americans, including my Grandpa who I never got to know.

He died in Anzio.

So, I do not know but it seems like this kind of thinking only leads to others thinking the same way which results in more people suffering.

I would choose to try to make things better rather than making things worse.

Use Stories to Enhance Your Speaking

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

Using stories, especially your own can help your public speaking.

This picture from my mother-in-law reminded me of one of the many stories of my life.

frosty out house toilet seat, another definition of the word freezer

Here is the Northern Minnisota definition of 'freezer.'

This reminded me of my youth and having to shovel three foot of snow to get to the outhouse at my Uncle Bud’s. He even had the phone that you had to wind up and ring the operator in order to call outside the area. It was not that long ago.

Apparently things like this still exist.

Incorporate stories from your childhood into your public speaking to make them come alive.

When Should You Use Negative Motivation

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Most of the time it is counter productive to use negative motivation. However there is one exception. This is when you frame the threat as something that the entire group is facing. Then it is a combined threat for everyone, including the one making the threat.

But there is an essential point when the threat has to be transformed into an positive motivation. If you make this switch, then the positive becomes exponential.

This is an essential skill to learn as a public speaking motivator and reaching the audience mind.

To get the answer, go to SpeechMastery.com in the motivation section to get the answer.
