Trademark Anyone?

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

Since much of public speaking is to and for businesses, it is often beneficial to hand out information that will benefit the business man audience but that he may not know about.

You can keep yourself in the picture by creating the info in a way that it will be useful and helpful.

Also, put your contact info on each page of your audience handout.

One such thing you can include in your hand out would be the trademark availability information found on this Squidoo lens and the link provided.

The Truth about Cockroaches and Radiation

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Cockroaches and radiation make great icing for your public speaking.

Dispelling common beliefs that have become urban legend is empowering to your audience. People like truth. People like to learn. Give them what they want. Here is an example of a commonly believed untruth. CockroachesĀ  are not the only know survivors of a nuclear war. Actually they are only a little better than humans in surviving radiation exposure.

There is a survivor and this one will survive big time doses. The article is a bit geeky so it will need to be simplified for the audience.

Ethics and Public Speaking

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

As public speakers, we have a higher accountability. Whether on or off the stage, we have an ethical responsibility. In creating a new section on the Speechmastery.com Website dealing with Public Speaking Ethics one ethical standard is that it is never appropriate to speak badly of another.

Patricia Fripp’s Blog said the same in that it is the office of the President that deserves our respect. Beyond that, President Bush is also a public speaker, even though a bit unique. He deserves respect regardless of our personal feelings. Anything else is unethical.

This reminds me of a story about a woman who it was said that she could find something good to say about anyone. When challenged to find something good about the Devil, she quickly came back with, “Well, he is a hard worker.”

We do not have to extol virtues of those we do not like. We can just not say anything about them.

Try this exercise on for size. If you hear someone say something bad about another, a coworker, neighbor or even our soon to be former president, try to find something good to say as well. It will be an interesting exercise and will enhance your ability to think on your feet.

What do you think?

The Six Needs of an Adult Audience

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

They need to know why they are learning
They need to know how it relates to their self concept
They need to have a learning experience
They need to have a readiness to learn ( can be promoted by the speaker)
They need to have an orientation to learning
They need a motivation for learning

There is a key to meeting the needs. It will help you be able to better reach the audience mind.
