Define Gout: How to Use Definitons in Public Speaking

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

I saw a speaker define gout the other day. His head was focused on his notes on the lectern. The enitre audinece could have been making faces at him and the speaker would have never known.

When speaking one common mistake of the inexperienced is trying to give definitions. The challenge comes from not being able to remember the entire definition. To further add injury, the speaker will have to look down to read from the notes. This causes a total loss of audience contact.

To remedy this, consider picking up the notes and just read them. Your reading them anyway, why not just hold your notes up and maintain the contact with the audience.

An example of a long complicated definition would be to define gout as it was given recently. If it is unfamiliar or challenging information, reading will help enhance the quality of your speaking.

The Whole Truth

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

When presenting a topic that is well known by both sides of the issue, one of the two sides will not appreciate hearing it.  One side will revel in the knowledge. Even if you are on one side or the other, always present facts that do not support your position. This allows you to show the whole truth. This will exponentially improve your credibility. An example of this can be found in the results of improving the health of your lungs after smoking cessation. On this issue, one of the studies found that cutting the amount of cigarettes smoked does not decrease health risk. Have fun.

People like to learn. One of the best ways to teach is stories. They have to be real life, true stories to work best in your public speaking. Even the simplest of them will work to educate your audience.

Include the moral or lesson to be learned.

Here is one on Click Fraud that is used in my Website Building Lectures.
